Two Tunnels Shared Path

A new link path for Bath and North East Somerset

Route Rides

Midford Castle and the moon - from the old lineWe organise regular guided rides over as much of the path as is accessible to the public - usually on the last Saturday of the month. We start adjacent to the Royal Oak public house, Lower Bristol Road from where it's a short walk to the start of Linear Park. We then follow this to the site of the first tunnel, and then cross the Wellsway above the tunnel to find the Lyncombe Vale section. A steep climb then brings us to the top of Combe Down, and an even steeper descent allows us to view Tucking Mill Viaduct before a last gentle stroll to Midford. Return from Midford, for those who would rather not climb the hill again, is along the NCN 24 to Dundas and NCN 4 back to Bath.

Route Ride dates 2007

Previous Route Rides

Saturday May 26th
We offered both a walk and a bike based tour of the route - and both parties met up at the Hope and Anchor pub in Midford, causing the driver of the 2 o'clock bus back a bit of a surprise as he'd probably not had so many Midford passengers for quite some time!

Route ride saturday 24th march in Linear ParkThis seemed to be very much enjoyed by everyone, but it was the turnout that was a complete surprise - almost 40 people, ranging in age from 8 years old to 83! Thankyou Sustrans and the Bath Chronicle who helped publicise this event. Here's a further pile of images.

Note: this was a special event. This photo in no way represents the intensity of use by people on cycles that the path will generate! The Two Tunnels route is being developed as a shared use path - it will not be purely for people on cycles.

The Bath Chronicle photographer turned up promptly and took a big group photograph of us gathered at the Lower Bristol Road, after which the entire group made its way up the Linear Park, stopping at key points to interpret the plans and for question and answer sessions.

We also met with various local residents along the way to hear what they liked and didn't like about the proposals, and what could be improved. If you're reading this and still have your own suggestions and ideas we (and the planning authority) are happy to hear from you. It's quite acceptable to be supportive of the principle, yet request changes!

We visited all four tunnel mouths - but this involved climbing the hills in between, and the various roads (Wellsway was practically at a standstill in both directions anyway!)

Please revisit this page as we've more photos in preparation. If you have photos you'd like to see on the web site, please send them in. Thanks to Paul Guest who has already done so.

If you came on the ride and would like to take action to support this idea, please write in support of the planning application, and please also visit this project's Sustrans Connect2 page and pledge support for it there.

Surprisingly, we made it to the Hope and Anchor at Midford well within three hours ... we didn't have a chance to speak as a group again at that point, but thanks for coming along!
