Thirsty Work

last mile in frostYou won't find 'Last Mile' in bottles (yet), but on handpumps in three Bath pubs: The 'Raven', The 'Royal Oak' on the Lower Bristol Road and The 'Green Tree'. It's also rumoured to be making its way to the Hope and Anchor at Midford ... Update: it's selling very well ...

On November 26th 2007, voting opens for The People's £50 Million Lottery Giveaway, and you will have an opportunity to vote for one of four projects to receive £50 million. Of the four, only one affects the whole country – 'Connect2'.

Connect2 is the brainchild of Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity. Connect2 is composed of 79 individual projects nationwide that will connect people and places to the Sustrans network.

Connect2 will build or restore bridges, crossings, paths and tunnels linking people to cycling and walking routes that will take them to schools, shops, work and green spaces. These improvements to local travel routes will enable approximately 60 million journeys per year and eliminate 79,000 tonnes of annual CO2 emissions.

The Two Tunnels Project is a flagship of Connect2 - aiming to create a shared-use path (called the 'Two Tunnels Greenway') through the centre of Bath.

Last Mile labelUtilising an abandoned section of the old Somerset and Dorset railway line, the Project links communities from the west side of Bath all the way to Tucking Mill, near Midford. The path will provide a safe, vehicle-free route for walkers and cyclists as an alternative to scaling Bath’s many surrounding hills. The route is just over four miles long, is completely flat, and makes use of two old railway tunnels; hence the name.

As well as Sustrans, the Two Tunnels Project is supported by Bath and North East Somerset Council, the Bath Ramblers, the Bath Cycling Campaign, and many other local groups.

last mile bottlTo honour the bid, the Two Tunnels Group, a local organisation of walkers, cyclists and eco-campaigners, has commisioned a time-limited special edition real ale called 'Last Mile'. The ale is named in reference to Connect2's premise of taking the green transport network 'the last mile' to people’s front doors. Last Mile is hand-crafted by the award-winning team at Blindmans Brewery in Frome.

Please support Sustrans in their Connect2 bid for The People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway. Remember, by supporting Connect2, you are helping Bath as well as 78 other communities around the UK.
